Vigil in Raleigh to Close the Guantánamo Bay Prison

Vigil in Raleigh to Close the Guantánamo Bay Prison

Join fellow CJJniks and organizing sponsors NC Stop Torture Now (NCSTN), Eisenhower Chapter 157 of Veterans for Peace, NC Peace Action, and others to say "CLOSE the GUANTANAMO PRISON!"

On January 11, 2023, the shameful prison at Guantanamo Bay will have been open for 21 years.  This vigil is a call on the Biden Administration for prompt action to close it.  January 11 also will be a sad memorial to the longevity of the prison, a travesty of justice where 35 Muslim men still languish, all having been tortured, the majority entirely innocent, and many now with serious health problems.  Guantanamo remains a symbol of torture and racism, and a huge stain on our country’s conscience.  With its “forever prisoners,” who face no criminal charges but are to be held until they die to prevent them from disclosing details of their abuse, the prison undercuts US credibility in advocating for human rights anywhere in the world.

The Raleigh January 11 vigil will join those in other cities across the U.S.  NCSTN is active in the national Close Guantánamo Coalition, which includes Amnesty International, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Witness Against Torture, 9/11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, Public Citizen, CodePink, National Religious Campaign against Torture, and others.

We hope to see you in Raleigh on January 11!   Bring signs, black hoods, and orange jumpsuits if you have them.  Spread word to come draw attention to this ongoing injustice.
