The Space Between: Jewish Wisdom from Jews of Color to commemorate Juneteenth
CJJ members have been invited to this community event by the Jewish Organizing Institute & Network. This event is not hosted by CJJ.
What does it mean to navigate Jewish spaces as a Jew of Color who is, simultaneously, siloed and hyper-visible? This is one of the many questions facing Jews of Color, particularly Black Jews, who are stepping up to lead, to build power, and to organize the Jewish community, and our broader communities, around a vision of equity and dignity.
JOIN for Justice’s newly launched Jews of Color Organizing Fellowship (JOCOF) is training 20 Jews of Color across the country as professional community organizers. Our curriculum includes organizing skills, JOC history, transformative justice, and self-care and resilience. We also tap into the wells of Jewish wisdom and tradition to deepen Fellows’ leadership and to claim JOC’s place in tradition.
As we lead up to Juneteenth, join us as JOCOF Director Bryant Heinzelman teaches one of the Jewish wisdom sessions he has designed for the program. Bryant teaches that it sometimes seems the stories and contributions of JOCs are overlooked, but God spoke from between the wings of the cherubim (angles) on the Ark of the Covenant (of the Mishkan) and that place was deemed holy. Similarly, it is sacred work when Jews of Color act to build bridges between their many communities and the spaces between.
Three brilliant panelists will respond to Bryant’s teaching and discuss anti-racism, anti-Blackness within Jewish spaces, how white Jews can proactively divest from these systems, and the holy work Jews of Color are leading in their communities. Our panelists:
- Yehudah Webster, Program Director, Inside Out Wisdom and Action Project (IOWA)
- Alexandra Corwin, Executive Director, Ammud: The Jews of Color Torah Academy
- Kelly Whitehead, rabbinical student at HUC-JIR and JOIN Seminary Leadership Project alum
