Voting rights are the bedrock of democracy, and they are under grave threat. After record turnout in last year’s election, 28 new laws have passed in 17 states in an attempt to make it harder to vote. More restrictive laws are still under consideration. The greatest impact will be on people in material poverty, especially people of color, and on the youth, the elderly, and those with mobility limitations. Without easy and equitable access to the polls, local, state, and federal governments will not be able to make progress on any other issue.
We now have a chance to make a difference if we can help pass the For The People Act. This important legislation will help counteract these Jim Crow attempts to suppress the vote, and U.S. Senate leaders and President Biden are working hard to pass this important bill. But not everyone is on board yet, and we have a deadline! We need to pass For The People Act before the Senate goes on its summer recess. Their last day in session is August 6, which is also the 56th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965!
Let's make history together!
We call on all members and supporters of CJJ and UU Forward Together to join tens of thousands of people across the country to make a final push to pass this bill. In the spirit of democracy, let’s make our voices heard and amplify our voices by getting others to speak out as well.
On our weekend of action, we will gather as a community, learn more about the For the People Act, then take some simple actions together while we’re online to help propel the passage of this critical bill! Come on either or both of these dates:
-
Friday, July 30, from 11 am - noon
-
Sunday, August 1, from 5:30 - 6:30 pm.
