Resistance & Survival: A Jewish Partisan of the Parczew Forest

CJJ members have been invited to this community event. This event is not hosted by CJJ.

The annual Holocaust commemoration sponsored by the Jewish community of Durham/Chapel Hill takes place at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, 2023 at Beth El Synagogue, 1004 Watts St., Durham, 27701. The main speaker at this year’s memorial is Dr. John Wurzelmann of Chapel Hill. His talk, entitled Resistance & Survival: A Jewish Partisan of the Parczew Forest, centers on the remarkable life story of his late father, Ludwig Wurzelmann, who was born in 1926 in Warsaw. Ludwig Wurzelmann escaped Nazi captivity and fled into the woods, where he joined partisan fighters waging guerilla war against the mighty Wehrmacht.

In addition, the 2023 commemoration will feature a candle-lighting ceremony as well as music by the Triangle Jewish Chorale and other local artists. Rabbi Daniel Greyber of Beth El Synagogue will chant El Male Rachamim and lead the Mourner’s Kaddish.

Admission is free, and all are welcome. For more information, contact [email protected] or [email protected].
