Carolina Jews for Justice (CJJ) seeks an exceptional leader with vision, a strong and demonstrated commitment to social justice, and a passion for our diverse Jewish community to serve as our new Executive Director (Director).
CJJ is a Jewish grassroots organization committed to creating a just, fair, and compassionate North Carolina. We combine advocacy, education, and action to organize a non-partisan Jewish voice for justice in North Carolina. CJJ works to influence policy at the local and state levels and encourage individuals and Jewish institutions to take a stand on important issues in our community, including antisemitism, racial injustice, immigration, poverty and income inequality, voting rights, and the environment. We have three active chapters across the state. In addition to a Director, CJJ employs two organizers, currently based in Greensboro and Asheville, engages an active Board of Directors, and has a robust network of supporters. This position can be based anywhere in North Carolina with a preference for the Triangle region.
Responsibilities:
Vision & Leadership
● Work with the Board and staff to shape strategic goals to ensure CJJ fulfills its mission.
● Promote an agenda that aligns with CJJ’s strategic goals and continues to build power for the Jewish community as a progressive voice.
● Supervise community organizing, supporting the development and evaluation of campaigns and member leadership
Community & Public Relations
● Serve as a leader with and maintain a strong and engaged relationship with national and local partnerships and alliances.
● Serve as a spokesperson for CJJ and represent the mission, visions, values and programs to media, community, Jewish leaders, agencies, and decision makers.
● Foster local relationships and resources that help ground CJJ’s work in Jewish ritual and life.
Program Planning
● Provide strategic leadership in the development of programming in consultation with staff.
● Integrate Jewish values, traditions, cultural wisdom into CJJ’s work.
Management & Operations
● Recruit, hire, and supervise staff, providing clear job descriptions and regular feedback.
● Maintain office records and documents in compliance with federal, state and local statutes and regulations, and with grant requirements.
● Evaluate current benefits and administration of benefits and potentially expand benefits for staff.
Fiscal Management
● Oversee development of CJJ’s budget with input from the Board and staff.
● Define a strategy that supports the long-term financial health of the organization.
Development
● Provide strategic leadership for development activities, including membership campaigns, grant writing, legacy gifts, and donor cultivation and stewardship.
● Maintain a close, on-going relationship with Board members, major donors and foundations.
Desired Qualifications:
CJJ seeks someone with experience leading a team, someone who has served as a campaign director, a lead organizer and/or directing a social justice non-profit. If you cannot offer all of the desired qualifications below but think you may be the right fit with training and coaching, CJJ is able to provide professional coaching and other professional development support to grow into the role.
● Deep commitment to building a powerful Jewish voice for social, racial, and economic justice;
● Strong ability to build relationships within the Jewish community and externally with partners across lines of race, faith, and class;
● Demonstrated effectiveness in building and participating in coalitions;
● Minimum of five years leadership experience, preferably with organizing or advocacy;
● Exceptionally strong written and oral communication skills, with proven experience in grant-writing, public speaking, and communication with external audiences;
● Demonstrated track record of successful staff management and supervision;
● Familiarity with models of organizing and power-building, including legislative advocacy and government relations;
● Comfort with the computer and technology demands of a modern organization; experience with reviewing and analyzing data; familiarity with online communication channels and tools;
● Working knowledge of budgets, non-profit finance and governance, and fiscal management preferred but not required; and
● Experience fundraising with individual donors at all levels as well as with foundations preferred but not required.
Salary & Benefits explanation:
Hiring salary for this position is $80,000/year. Current benefits include 100% employer paid health insurance, 50% health insurance coverage for dependents, monthly phone/Internet stipend, support for professional development, and 15 paid vacation/sick leave days plus most federal and Jewish holidays. Flexible hours, including option to not work Fridays.
