Briefing on HB 942 - Defining Antisemitism in NCGA
Increasingly, we see far right actors exploit Jewish people and Judaism in order to advance their extremist agendas. We must not be fooled. This is why CJJ is advocating against HB 942 - the “SHALOM” Act - a bill introduced in the NC General Assembly by Rep. Tim Moore (R) that would adopt a highly contested and problematic definition of antisemitism by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).
We see this bill for what it is: a trap for curtailing free speech and chilling dissent, a distraction from documented and increasing antisemitism that threatens us in North Carolina, with the ultimate goal of dismantling democracy and both public and higher education.
To learn more about HB 942, and what we advocate for instead, I encourage you to attend a briefing session on Monday, May 6, from 7:00-8:30 pm. We’ll share more about what the bill is, why it is introduced now, and how we can work together to continue opposing antisemitism and uphold that which keeps ALL of us safe and well.
