Southern Jews: Building Community in the Face of Crisis

Our country is facing unprecedented challenges. In the midst of a global pandemic, safe and fair elections are at risk, and the recent vacancy on the Supreme Court presents yet another opportunity for authoritarian powers to strong-arm the democratic process.

As Southerners, we live on land that holds the legacy of chattel slavery, where far-right authoritarian forces continue to dominate, and where public services, bodily autonomy, and democracy have been methodically undermined. But here in the South we also have access to powerful legacies of resistance and the deep wisdom that is born from persistent struggle.

We as Jews know well the dangers of unchecked power and the violence that it engenders. We also know well the history of our people's resistance to such injustice. Now is the time to step into that legacy as Jews and as freedom fighters.

Though most of our events are for North Carolinians, we are inviting our whole Southern Jewish Mishpucha (family) to gather together on October 21 at 7:00 p.m. ET for a conversation about the current political landscape, what might come post-election, and our legacy as Southern Jews. We look forward to connecting with each other as we face similar conditions across the region.
